We are always told that body language and especially eye contact is very important if not crucial when meeting someone new. I get it, it is a question of confidence and attitude, but really how important eye contact is and why?

You are right, body language is very important because it is a non-verbal way of communication and there are so many things you can express with gestures and you cannot do the same with words.
Eye contact is decisive actually when women decide whether or not to give you a second chance. It is about what you can express when you look at her and basically this is the easiest way to build attraction because it creates tension.
You always have to keep in mind that whenever a woman is looking at you, you have to look back until she breaks the eye contact. If she keeps it for a while or smiles, it is her way of telling you that she is interested and this is the best time to walk up to her and approach her. If you do this, the chances of you failing to keep her interested are extemely slim because you let her know that you understood what she wanted and you are not afraid to make a move.
Maintaining eye contact will make you feel in control and dominating the tension between you. A confident man is not afraid of eye contact because he knows that if a woman stares at him, it means that she is interested and the only way to keep her interested is to look back into her eyes.
